Entitlement? Just be glad you have a job. The unsteady economy and possibility of a crashing dollar combined with increased unemployment means the millennial generation is facing a tougher job market than ever. Maybe this isn’t the best time to take your one year of experience and make the move to the big city or to finally buy that car that you can almost afford.
The reality of the current work environment for young people is that, for the average among us, jobs aren’t going to be as plentiful or as high paying as they may have seemed from the college classroom. Recent graduates are facing a different job market than the promising environment that existed while they were still students. Employers that once focused on hiring the right person and training for the skills is now more likely to be looking for someone that already possesses the required skills. Training someone is a big investment and just like private citizens, most companies are less willing to make those larger investments in the current market.
What should I do? If you’re currently employed, work hard and make yourself a valuable asset to your company. The reality of the work world is that one day you’re happily employed and the next day you aren’t. I’ve seen it happen and feel personally lucky to be where I am, even if it isn’t my final destination. For those of us still searching, don’t give up your dreams, but concentrate less on the long shot job opportunities. Right now those jobs are going to go to the best of the best, and if you’re not one of them, take this time to become one by educating yourself and gaining experience. Now is a time to find your place and stay there. Make your moves wisely.
