Real Life

October 1, 2008

The period immediately following college isn’t always the exciting, uplifting and life changing moment we’re often led to believe it’s going to be. It marks not only a major life change, but also a major change in the way we see ourselves. The realities of life, money, jobs and things not turning out the way you imagined can often be a slap in the face for recent grads. Life is hard and unfair, and a taste of the real world often makes college seem like a cakewalk. If only we knew then what we know now, right?

Post graduation depression is a common problem for twenty-somethings trying to find their place in the world. Especially our current crop of new graduates, whose attitude of entitlement does a particularly good job of setting one up for a rude awakening. What? No downtown loft apartment and new Audi? Nope. Just work and a little bit of money for the basic necessities. True, some launch into the world and shine, but not all of us adjust perfectly to our environment and that’s ok. Not everyone has to take off like a rocket, sometimes things need to gain a little momentum, and once they do, they’re unstoppable.

So, what does one do about it? Go to work like and end up like the guy in the cubicle next to you that’s been at the company since he was 22? No! Just because you didn’t launch out of college and take the world by the horns doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It takes time to establish yourself and even more time to figure out the dynamic environment of the work world.
