Such a great lesson! I encountered this just this morning, as I was reviewing a student's cover letter (I'm a career advisor at a small college in Boston). The cover letter did a great job of answering the question, "Why do you want this job?" but completely missed the big question: "What can you offer this employer?" It's hard to master this basic concept, but once you do, you'll be a much better job seeker. It's not about you, it's about the employer.

I would counter that quote with one to employers: Employees are here to fulfill their lives. Employees don't care about your company, or how they can give to it (unless they have some stake in the company, which isn't really possible for a new employee).

So, really, you just need to know how to say what employers want to hear: What can I do for the company? No one really believes that that is what the employee is really focused on.

Interviewing is all about bullsh***ing well.
