Word to your motha

October 29, 2008

I read this article recently on WSJ.com – The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go to Work.

You read it right, it’s called The ‘Trophy Kids’ Go to Work. Who are the trophy kids? It’s YOU, Millennial.

You’re a “trophy kid” because the older generation has taken your positive attitude, willingness to work (albeit not in the traditional way) and clear picture of what you want to know/do and turned it into a threat to the workplace.

It’s not. You’re entering the workplace with more knowledge of the “real world” than any generation before you. Your parents taught you, your schools taught you and you taught yourself on the Internet.

A Millennial’s journey to adulthood is littered with information about life and career. The days of young employees entering the workplace without knowing “what’s up” are over. Sure, the politics and office environment still have to be navigated, but pile on the work.

Hey bosses, we’re smart. We know when you don’t know what you’re doing, we know what parts of the company could be better and, sometimes, we know that when we’re your age, we’ll be in better positions at better companies. So, it’s no wonder the “entitlement” badge got slapped on everyone’s forehead, you can probably see it in my eyes right now.

Millennials will have a positive impact on the corporate world. Yes, plenty are worthless, but just as many are smart, innovative and ready to shake it up with new ideas. The key is getting the senior workers to let them.

It’s not what you know, it’s what you do

October 26, 2008

You think, “I wish I could go back knowing what I know now.”
Everyone does. We have a shared belief that the present would somehow be better if we’d acted differently in the past. It probably would be better, but you’re not going to get to go back, so why think about it?
What you can do [...]

Never ever

October 21, 2008

Never ever have an office relationship, ever.
Maybe you’re lucky and you’ve never been through a serious breakup. Then it might seem like no big deal, but boy you’re in for it if you fall in love with a coworker.
Do you like your job? Well, get ready to leave it. There’s no way you can keep [...]

Start that biz!

October 18, 2008

Yes, starting salaries for technical degrees are decent, but you’re not an engineer. Human resources, public relations, marketing, sales and the rest of your soft skilled peers are probably going to earn a little over $40,000/ year starting out if you find a good company and a position that isn’t considered “cool” – in which [...]

Warren Buffet speaks the truth

October 16, 2008

Watch this video. It’s part of a speech the Buffet gave at the University of Florida to a graduating MBA class.
One of his main points is that people have the ability to become the person they want to be. Of all the things we can’t change about ourselves, the most important thing – the person [...]
